Abstract

This paper proposes a framework for Choof!, a simple, instrumented system for distributing branded media through private interpersonal networks. A participant receives a single media unit, such as a poster, teaser, trailer, or product image, holds it for a limited period, and passes it to one other person they know. Each pass is recorded, producing a traceable chain of peer-to-peer propagation. The paper argues that Choof! is best understood not as a general advertising model and not as a direct measure of unconstrained virality, but as a tool for testing early market receptivity to new products, campaigns, and creative assets. The core contribution is a framework for measuring propagation quality, cluster penetration, and early predictive traction from a deliberately simple peer-to-peer mechanic.

Introduction

Digital advertising is highly scalable, but it is often poorly suited to the earliest stage of product and campaign testing. At launch, firms do not always need maximum reach. They need to know whether a piece of launch media is naturally passable, whether it resonates with real people, whether it travels beyond an initial circle, and which groups respond to it more strongly than others.

Choof! is designed for this narrower problem. A participant receives one media object, holds it briefly, and passes it to one other person they know. The platform records who passed it, when, how long it was held, and whether the chain continued. Each interpersonal transfer becomes an observable event.

What the literature says

Trust research shows that recommendations from known people are more trusted than conventional advertising channels. Diffusion research shows that most online cascades are small and structurally simple rather than explosive, which is why the accurate concept here is constrained peer-to-peer propagation, not unconstrained virality. Referral research shows incentives can increase sharing but may introduce credibility costs, so the incentive layer must stay light enough not to collapse authenticity. New product diffusion work suggests early propagation patterns can carry predictive information about wider uptake.

Conceptual reframing

Choof! is a propagation-testing system, not a universal advertising platform. One item is received. One item is held. One item is passed. Because the media unit remains singular and the transfer remains singular, the resulting data are analytically cleaner than a cluttered multi-choice social environment. The correct comparison is not to all advertising, but to early-stage testing methods.

Research objective

The core objective is to estimate early market receptivity through observable peer-to-peer propagation. Which media asset is more naturally passable? Which survives longer across generations of transfer? Which penetrates more distinct clusters? Which groups appear more receptive? Which propagation patterns correlate with downstream interest, recall, or conversion?

Method

The natural implementation is an A/B test: comparable participants receive media variant A or B through the same mechanism, with seed conditions, incentives, time limits, and interface held constant. A baseline condition of ordinary passive exposure gives a cleaner estimate of incremental propagation value. Dependent variables include chain continuation, chain depth, pass timing, hold duration, time to first cluster crossing, clusters penetrated, subgroup responsiveness, and downstream actions.

Measuring penetration

Penetration is not just total people reached. It is the extent to which the media moves into socially distinct communities, measured through depth (generations survived), breadth across clusters, distance from seed, speed of spread, and segment relevance. The system asks not who saw the media, but where it went, how far, how fast, and which groups considered it worth passing on.

Commercial relevance and limits

The strongest framing is not “this replaces digital advertising” but “this measures whether a piece of launch media carries enough relevance to travel through real people.” Propagation is not the same as product success: an asset may travel well without producing sustained demand, and the platform partly shapes the behavior it observes. It is a high-signal testing environment, not a market simulator.

Conclusion

Choof! is a framework for measuring early market receptivity by observing how simple launch media propagates through private interpersonal networks under light incentive conditions. Its value lies in preserving simplicity while making interpersonal propagation measurable. It bridges word-of-mouth theory, diffusion analysis, referral design, and practical new product testing.
